Setup path

Install the frontend, fetch cores, map pads, load shaders, host netplay on TCP 55435, and handle antivirus false hits.

Installation

Windows portable or installer

Stable is the controlled release. Nightly is the daily GitHub snapshot.

  1. Get RetroArch 1.22.2 for your architecture from the download page.
  2. If you picked the 7z, extract it to a folder you own, for example your user directory. Skip Program Files.
  3. If you picked the setup package, keep the default location unless you have a reason not to.
  4. Set Directory paths for System, Savefile, Savestate and Browser before a large scan.
  5. Open Online Updater and download cores you actually need.

Controllers

Autoconfig, then bind all

XInput pads should appear with an OSD autoconfig event. If they do not:

  1. Open Settings, Input, Input User 1 Binds.
  2. Choose User 1 Bind All and press each control as prompted.
  3. Use User 1 Save Autoconfig if you swap pads often, then Bind Default All.

Cores

Core Downloader

  1. Online Updater, Core Downloader.
  2. Install the core for that system. Examples: Snes9x Next, Gambatte, PCSX ReARMed.
  3. Load Content, pick the file, then pick the core if more than one fits.
  4. A successful database match adds the title to a playlist.

Shaders

Load a preset while a game runs

  1. Update shader packs from Online Updater.
  2. Start content, open Quick Menu, Shaders.
  3. Load Shader Preset. A documented example is shaders_glsl/crt/crt-geom.glslp.
  4. Match Slang or GLSL to the active video driver. The wrong type can crash some contexts.

Netplay

Lobby, port 55435, matching CRCs

  1. Use the same RetroArch version and the same core as the host.
  2. Scan content so the playlist stores a CRC. "Incompatible content" usually means the images differ.
  3. Hosts forward TCP 55435 unless they change the port.
  4. Cores that testers have used successfully include Genesis Plus GX, Snes9x, FCEUmm and older FBA. Not every core netplays cleanly.

Troubleshooting

Antivirus and steep menus

download.it reviewers say the interface can overwhelm new users. Give Ozone time, or switch to RGUI if you only need a compact list.

  1. If Defender or Norton deletes a core, restore it only after the hash matches.
  2. Exclude the RetroArch directory from live scanning.
  3. Prefer stable 1.22.2 over a random nightly if you want fewer heuristic hits.
